Spitzer Sued for Defamation by Former Marsh & McLennan Executive Gilman
Former Gov. Spitzer Sued for $60 Million for Defamation by Former Insurance Exec.
A former Marsh & McLennan Cos. executive who had insurance-fraud charges against him dropped sued ex-New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer alleging defamation in a Slate magazine article.
William Gilman, whose final charge in the case was dismissed in January, said Spitzer in a Slate.com article, in response to a Wall Street Journal article critical of his investigation, indicated that Gilman was guilty of crimes although he wasn’t named, according to an Aug. 19 complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
Gilman worked for Marsh & McLennan from 1976 to 2004. In 2004 Spitzer announced an investigation into practices at the company, including fees paid by insurers to brokers who place business with them. Gilman was indicted in 2005 on 37 counts. He was convicted of one charge, restraint of trade and competition.
